Introduction / History

The Ajuran living in northeastern Kenya have their roots in the Muslim Ajuran dynasty in Somalia. They ruled over much of the Horn of Africa in the Middle Ages. Many of the ruined fortifications dotting the landscapes of southern Somalia today date to the Ajuran sultanate's engineers. During the Ajuran period, many people in the southern part of the Horn of Africa converted to Islam. At the end of the 17th century, the Ajuran state disintegrated into several successor kingdoms and states. Today, Ajuran is a Somali clan.

What Are Their Lives Like?

We know very little about their lifestyle in Kenya.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Somali-speaking Ajurans are solidly Sunni Muslim.

What Are Their Needs?

Opposition to Christians can be strong in parts of northern Kenya, where Muslims are in the majority. Overt Christian testimony can be dangerous. That makes it difficult to reach Somali speakers with the gospel.

Prayer Items

Pray that influential people within the Ajuran tribe, such as the imams, would be given a growing interest in spiritual truth leading them to the cross.
Pray that Jesus will reveal himself to some in a vision or dream.
Pray that those workers presently reaching out to the Ajuran will be filled with wisdom and the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
There may be a few followers of Jesus among the Ajuran. They very much need prayer support. Pray they would not waver in their commitment to Christ.
