Introduction / History

There are a few thousand speakers of the Edera Awyu language. They are called the Siagha-Yenimu or Oser people. They live in the province of Papua Indonesia.

What Are Their Lives Like?

As a livelihood the Osers primarily garden and hunt; some also work for a logging company in this swampy area of South Papua. Rubber plantations have been started but have not been profitable. The people eat sago, bananas, and yams. With their land at an altitude of less than 100 meters above sea level, the Oser people can best be accessed by boat.
In the evening, electricity is available in Amk. A generator in Yame and Harapan provides some electricity. Drinking water is obtained from springs or the river. Malaria, cholera, and skin diseases are common even though a medical worker is assigned to almost every village. Edera Awyu leaders are elected locally.

What Are Their Beliefs?

It is estimated that less than half of the Edera Awyu speakers have understood the gospel but there is one Protestant church (in Benggo) and a number of Catholic churches in the area.

What Are Their Needs?

The Oser people have no gospel cassettes, films or videos in their language. They are starting to translate the Bible, but it has a long way to go.

Pray that soon, Oser disciples will disciple others in the ways of Christ.
