Lamaholot is both a language and the name of a tribe in Indonesia and Malaysia. Their homeland was passed from the Portuguese to the Dutch and then to the British during the colonial era.
Most are farmers who grow tropical foods such as cassavas, sweet potatoes, beans, pumpkin, tropical fruits, and vegetables. Their staple foods include boiled corn and rice with vegetables with fish sauce. Those in the most accessible coastal regions make and sell textiles and farm tools.
Portuguese missionaries converted most of them to Catholicism in the 1500s, and they are still predominantly Catholic. There is now a strong Evangelical minority and some are Muslim.
Lamaholots need more markets for their woven goods. They also need easily accessible medical facilities.
Pray for the Lord to bless them spiritually and physically.
Pray that God will soon use them as Christ’s ambassadors to the Muslims in Malaysia.
Pray that their churches will become Christ-centered and willing to focus on the finished work of the only savior.
