Introduction / History

Kristangs are a creole people. They are a blend of mainly Portuguese and local Malay peoples, who live in Malaysia and Singapore. They came from marriages between Portuguese men (sailors and traders) and local women in the 1500s and 1600s when Portugal was the dominant sea power. The Dutch took over after that, and later the British. They speak Malaccan Portuguese Creole.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Kristangs have their own cultural associations to keep their language and culture alive. They have restaurants that serve their traditional foods, which are heavy on fish and stews. Their folk dances mirror those of the Portuguese.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most are Roman Catholic to this day, though some are now Evangelical.

What Are Their Needs?

Kristangs need to look to the Lord for their identity and for acceptance.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Kristangs to find their love, acceptance, and identity in Jesus Christ.
Pray that their churches will become Christ-centered and willing to focus on the finished work of the only savior.
Pray that God will soon use them as Christ’s ambassadors to the Muslims in Malaysia.
Pray for the Lord to bless them spiritually and physically.
