Introduction / History

The Kiddea are a small people group reported only in Sri Lanka. They are part of the South Asian Buddhist affinity bloc and are closely tied to the Sinhala-speaking majority of the island. Historically, the Kiddea have lived in rural communities where agriculture and village life shaped their identity. Their traditions reflect the broader Sinhalese culture, yet they maintain distinct local practices and community bonds. Their history is marked by resilience in the face of Sri Lanka's colonial past and the ethnic tensions that have shaped the nation's modern era.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kiddea live in villages where farming, fishing, and small-scale trade provide sustenance. Rice cultivation is central, and coconut, spices, and tea are also part of their agricultural economy. Families are typically extended, with grandparents, parents, and children sharing responsibilities and living spaces. Respect for elders is deeply ingrained, and family honor is highly valued.

Celebrations often revolve around Buddhist festivals such as Vesak, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha. These events include lanterns, temple visits, and community feasts. Weddings are colorful, blending traditional attire with modern influences, and are occasions for extended kinship gatherings.

Food is a vital part of Kiddea life. Meals often consist of rice accompanied by curries made from vegetables, fish, or lentils, flavored with coconut milk and spices. Sharing meals is a sign of hospitality, and food is often prepared communally during festivals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kiddea are predominantly Buddhist, following Theravada traditions. Temples serve as the spiritual and social center of their communities, with monks providing guidance and teaching. Buddhism shapes their worldview, emphasizing karma, rebirth, and the pursuit of enlightenment. A small minority of Kiddea identify as Christians, but the presence of the gospel remains limited, with little history of Christian witness among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kiddea face both spiritual and physical needs. Spiritually, most have not heard or embraced the message of Jesus Christ, and the hope of salvation remains unknown to them. Physically, rural communities often struggle with limited access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. Young people migrate to cities for work, which can weaken traditional family structures. Social harmony is important, yet poverty and lack of resources hinder development. The Kiddea need opportunities for holistic transformation that address both their material challenges and their spiritual hunger.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Kiddea will encounter the love of Christ through scripture, audio recordings, and the JESUS Film, which are already available in their language.
Pray asking God to raise up believers among them who will become part of the mission force, sharing the gospel with their own people and beyond.
Pray for physical needs such as improved healthcare, education, and sustainable livelihoods.
Intercede for families to remain strong and united, and for young people to find hope and purpose in Christ rather than in migration alone.
Pray for open doors for dialogue that the Kiddea will see Jesus as the true answer to life's issues.
