To set themselves apart from other Galibi groups, this community calls themselves Galibi-Marworno, which means "people of Uaçá" in their local language. They live in the wide savannas and flooded fields of northern Amapá—a land of white birds and shadowy alligators. They describe themselves as a "mixed and united" people. Today, their native language is a variation of the Creole spoken in French Guiana.
Their food is simple and healthy: fish, manioc flour, and tucupi (a sauce made from manioc). During celebrations, caxiri—a kind of fermented drink—is essential. It is known as the drink of the indigenous people, shamans, and karuãna spirits.
The Galibi-Marworno’s daily activities change with the seasons. The dry season lasts from July to November, and the rainy season goes from December to June. Depending on the time of year or immediate needs, they hunt and fish in the upper part of the river (in the forest and rich waters), or plant and fish in the middle and lower parts (open savannas and raised planting areas in the flooded lands). They farm, but each family sells what they grow on their own. By law, they are supposed to sell directly to the customer without a middleman, which can be hard for them. So, they sell either at the market or by special order. Some also run small shops. Often, manioc flour is used like money, traded for other food items. They are also very skilled canoe builders and usually sell their canoes by order.
The helper spirits of the shamans and beings from "the other world" are an important part of the Galibi-Marworno’s spiritual beliefs and shamanism. Every October, during full moon nights, adult men gather in an isolated house in the field to sing until morning, drink to celebrate with the spirits, and give thanks for healing. Catholic traditions are also prevalent, particularly in life events such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
They have been introduced to a religion, but not to the Savior. They need to truly hear and understand the gospel that brings life.
Pray for bold and loving missionaries to go to this village with clear plans to share the love of Jesus.
Pray for open hearts ready to receive the gospel, and for the Holy Spirit to move freely among them.
Ask God to give them a clear revelation of Christ.
