Introduction / History

The Yoke are sometimes known as the Yoki, Yauke, Jauke, or Pauwi people. Both Indonesian Malay and Yoke is used at church and for the 1st year of schooling. The Yoke language is part of the Warembori language family. The Yoke people originally lived around Lake Rombebai but the government made them move to the coast.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Yoke people sell "shark syrup", crocodile skins, bananas, sago and clams from their northern coastal lowlands. At an altitude of less than 100 meters above sea level the Yoke people can best be accessed by boat.
The main staples of the Yoke peoples' diet are fish, yams, and sago.

What Are Their Beliefs?

A little over half of the Yokes are Christian. They waver between putting their faith in Jesus Christ and putting faith in the spirit world.

What Are Their Needs?

The Yoke would like to have a health worker. Other than gospel recordings, the Yokes have no gospel materials in their heart language.

Prayer Items

Pray for an abundance of oral gospel materials in the Yoke language.
Pray for a soon-coming revival in Yoke families and churches.
Pray they will soon become Christ's ambassadors to the least reached groups in Indonesia.
