Introduction / History

Grebos are subgroups of the larger Kru tribes. Within the Grebos, there are a number of dialects, but most also speak other languages. Dialects formed because they were isolated from other Grebo groups. One of their subgroups is the Gboloo Grebos who speak their own dialect.

Those in inland areas have a long-standing animosity with the politically dominant Americo-Liberians who bought their land long ago and have maintained far more wealth and power ever since. Starting in the late 1900s, some Grebo groups have tried to unify.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They had bush schools to initiate both males and females. These eventually morphed into Masonic lodges that reflected White American fraternal orders.

Gboloo Grebos are known for their carved wooden masks, which they use for ceremonies to deal with ancestral spirits. They would dance while wearing the masks.

Grebo chiefs and kings would wear a brass ankle ring that would remain until their death.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though they still practice some traditional religion, the Gboloo Grebos are strongly Christian. God can use them to take the gospel to people in West Africa who haven’t found their way to the only Savior, Jesus Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

The Gboloo Grebos need good medical care in each of their villages.

Pray for deliverance from the fear that hinders God's blessing from multiplying and blessing families and communities in this people group.
Pray for God's blessing on the leaders in this people group, along with their families, and for their communities to welcome and enjoy God’s blessing.
Pray for the Gboloo Grebos to love Jesus with their whole being.
Pray that soon they will become Christ’s ambassadors to Muslims in Africa.
