Introduction / History

The Christian Adi Dravida people are part of the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc and are primarily located in India. Their primary language is Tamil, a Dravidian language spoken widely in southern India. Historically, the Adi Dravida have been part of the Dalit community, often marginalized within India's caste system. Over time, many Adi Dravida individuals have embraced Christianity, forming a distinct Christian identity within this broader group. They are also known by alternate names such as Adi Dravidar, Chakkiliyan, Harijan, Madiga, and Pariyar.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Christian Adi Dravida live in both urban and rural areas across India, especially in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Many work in agriculture, construction, domestic labor, and service industries. Education levels are improving, and younger generations are increasingly pursuing higher education and professional careers. Despite these advancements, they still face challenges related to social discrimination, economic inequality, and limited access to resources in some regions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Adi Dravida Christians have a significant portion identifying as Evangelical. Their faith emphasizes salvation through Jesus Christ, the authority of Scripture, and active participation in church life. They have access to a wide range of Christian resources in Tamil, including the complete Bible, the JESUS Film, audio recordings, and radio broadcasts. These resources support spiritual growth and outreach efforts.

What Are Their Needs?

They need continued access to discipleship and biblical teaching in Tamil to strengthen their faith and equip them for ministry. They need culturally relevant leadership development, so that local pastors and evangelists can effectively minister within their communities.
They need support in overcoming social discrimination, especially in areas where caste-based bias still affects daily life. They need economic empowerment initiatives, including job training and small business support, to improve their livelihoods.
