Introduction / History

The Chorei Halam are a sub-tribe of the larger Halam community. They live in Tripura. Their language is Falam Chin.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Though most are rice farmers, fishing and livestock herding supplement their diets. Some Chorei Halams have government jobs, teach, or own small shops. Their women weave garments and fabrics for their own use and to sell.

Their families are patriarchal, extended, and clan-based. Elders make important decisions and help resolve community conflicts.

Roughly half are Christian. Traditional religion strongly affects their everyday beliefs and actions.

Chorei Halams need modern farming techniques so they can get higher yields for their crops. They also need easier access to medical care.
