Introduction / History
The Merus only live in Kenya, and they speak Kimiiru. They are divided into nine sections.
What Are Their Lives Like?
Their circumcision customs are very important to them. When a boy is circumcised, he has no contact with his father or female relatives. They build a separate home for him, and his mother leaves food for him outside his door.
Most Merus are agricultural, but they have a higher level of education than most. This came from mission efforts and boarding schools, which provide secondary education.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Traditionally, the Merus followed a spiritual leader called a Mugwe. The Mugwe was regarded as a prophet. Back in the days of mission work, the Methodists was their Christian denomination, so most are now Methodists. Almost all Merus are Christian.
What Are Their Needs?
The Merus need to put all their hope and faith in Jesus Christ.
Prayer Points
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move mightily in Mugwe churches and families, drawing thousands closer to the Lord of lords.
Pray for the Lord to put it on the heart of Mugwe Christians to send their own missionaries to some of Africa’s least-reached places.
Pray for the Lord to bless the Mugwes spiritually and financially in such a way that they will know of his power and goodness.
