Introduction / History

The Mbwela, also known as Ambuella, are a Bantu-speaking ethnic group primarily found in southeastern Angola, particularly in the provinces of Cuando Cubango, Bié, Moxico, Cunene, and Huíla. Their language, also called Mbwela, is classified under the Bantu language family. Historically, they have been part of the broader Bantu migrations that spread across Central and Southern Africa, establishing communities with distinct identities and social structures.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Mbwela people predominantly reside in rural villages where agriculture forms the cornerstone of their economy. They cultivate crops such as cassava, maize, millet, and groundnuts, and engage in livestock farming and fishing to supplement their diet. Social organization is typically based on extended family units, with communal cooperation being vital for agricultural activities and cultural practices. Traditional crafts, including beadwork and pottery, are integral to their artistic expression. While modern influences are gradually reaching Mbwela communities, many still adhere to traditional lifestyles, balancing cultural heritage with the challenges of contemporary life.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Mbwela traditionally practice a form of ancestor worship, believing that the spirits of their forebears continue to influence the living. Rituals and ceremonies are conducted to honor these spirits and seek their guidance and protection. Christianity has made significant inroads among the Mbwela, with a large percentage identifying as Christians. However, traditional beliefs and practices often coexist with Christian teachings, leading to a syncretic religious landscape. Evangelical Christianity is present, with a good portion of the population adhering to evangelical beliefs. Despite the presence of Christianity, access to comprehensive biblical resources in the Mbwela language remains limited.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mbwela people face numerous challenges, both physical and spiritual. Access to healthcare is limited, with many communities lacking adequate medical facilities and trained personnel. Clean water and sanitation are pressing concerns, as many villages rely on untreated water sources, resulting in significant health issues. Educational opportunities are scarce, particularly in remote areas, hindering the development of the younger generation. Spiritually, while many Mbwela identify as Christians, there is a need for deeper discipleship and understanding of the gospel.
