Introduction / History

The Kikuyu are the biggest tribe in Kenya. They speak Gikuyu.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They have much of the power of rule and leadership. They are small-scale farmers and keep livestock. Their main cash crop is maize.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kikuyu God is Mwenenyanga, who placed the Kikuyu and Mumbi under a mugumo tree. They gave birth to nine daughters who later found men to marry. These daughters were Wairimu, Wanjiku, Waithara, Wangui, Wambui, Wanjiru, Njeri/Wasera to mention a few. Their god, Mwenenyanga, living on Mount Kenya, is also known as Kirinyaga. They also believe in spirits and the dead, they offer libations to the dead so they can get blessings.

Today, most are Evangelical, providing a huge base for biblical Christianity in Kenya.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kikuyus are Evangelical. They need to be prepared and sent as a mission force in Africa. They need Perspectives classes in their country, and the willingness to learn about the Great Commission.

Prayer Points

Pray for revival fire to bless Kikuyu churches and families abundantly.
Pray that soon, Kikuyu churches will be preparing and sending workers to the least-reached parts of Africa.
Pray for Kikuyu to understand that the Lord can and will provide for all their spiritual and material needs when they put their trust in him.
