Chin, Hakha in Malaysia

Introduction / History

The Hakha Chin people are part of the Kuki-Chin ethnic cluster within the Tibetan / Himalayan Peoples affinity bloc. Originating from the mountainous regions of western Myanmar, particularly the town of Hakha in Chin State, they have a rich cultural heritage rooted in tribal traditions and community life. Over the years, many Hakha Chin have migrated to other countries, including the United States, seeking refuge from political instability and ethnic persecution in Myanmar.
Their primary language is Chin, Hakha, which belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family. The language is widely spoken among the community and serves as a key marker of identity.

What Are Their Lives Like?

In Myanmar, the Hakha Chin traditionally live in rural, mountainous areas, relying on subsistence agriculture, animal husbandry, and small-scale trade. Their communities are tightly knit, with strong emphasis on family, clan relationships, and mutual support.
In diaspora communities, such as in the United States, Hakha Chin families often settle in urban or suburban areas. They face challenges in adapting to new cultures, languages, and systems, but maintain their cultural identity through church gatherings, community events, and language preservation. Despite economic hardships, they are known for their resilience, work ethic, and commitment to education for their children.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Hakha Chin are predominantly Protestant Christians, a faith introduced by missionaries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Christianity is deeply woven into their cultural fabric. Most Hakha Chin identify with Evangelical denominations, and their churches play a central role in community life.
Their faith emphasizes salvation through Christ alone, justification by faith, and the authority of Scripture.
