Introduction / History

Jews have been living in France for at least 2,000 years. Their ancestors arrived in the region during the Roman Empire. Since then, they have had a strong influence on the development of Europe, as well as on the traditions of Jews throughout the world. In France, as in other parts of Europe, they have faced waves of persecution. Today, Paris is the hub of the Jewish community.

What Are Their Lives Like?

French Jewish people usually socialize with those outside their community, though others are more insular. They have faced persecution; today, Jewish persecution is most likely to come from recent Muslim immigrants.

French Jewish children and teens enjoy sports and outdoor activities.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many Jews in the younger generation are disconnected from their Jewish identity. They don’t observe Jewish traditions and are swiftly being assimilated into French culture. Like most of France and Europe, they are increasingly secular and disinterested in spiritual matters. These are usually the reformed Jews.

Other French Jewish people are dedicated Orthodox Jews.

What Are Their Needs?

For centuries, French Jewish people have learned to protect themselves from outsiders. Though this has protected them in many cases, it also highlights a belief that outsiders cannot be trusted.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Holy Spirit would give mission organizations new ideas for discipling the Jews of France.
Pray for God to speak to the Jews in ways that cut through the distractions and noise of modern life.
Mission activity focused on students, sports and social networks could be effective in reaching the younger generation of Jews in France. Pray for God to raise up anointed workers to reach the youth.
