In 1838 the British began to look for alternatives for African slaves for their Caribbean colonies. They began to hire East Indian indentured between 1861-1874. By 1884, most East Indians had moved to other Caribbean nations where there were more South Asians. These locations included Suriname, Guyana Trinidad and Tobago. A small number are now in Puerto Rico.
