Introduction / History

There is not much we know about the history or the language of the Muhakaona people. They live exclusively in Angola.

What Are Their Lives Like?

A typical Muhakaona man may have two wives simultaneously, and marriages are traditionally arranged early. Some girls are married at puberty—or even younger, around age 10—based on their father's decision. Boys are circumcised before puberty, marking the transition to manhood. Girls are considered women only after bearing a child; maternity is central to female status.

Livestock, especially goats—and sometimes cattle—are pivotal to their economy. Cattle signify wealth and social standing, while goats provide everyday subsistence. Muhakaona also cultivate maize and millet through rain-fed farming. Their diet is based on sour milk, maize porridge, with supplemental foods like eggs, wild herbs, honey, and cornmeal. Livestock is sold only occasionally for cash needs.

Men herd animals and may serve as trusted traditional healers or doctors. Women are recognized for their artistry—crafting irons, beadwork, dolls—although herding remains prioritized. Women craft headdresses from a mixture of cow dung, fat, and herbs. They often remove certain lower teeth and style hair into braided, ornamented shapes. Body adornment—bracelets and bead corsets—is common.

When not engaged in daily tasks, the Muhakaona are lively and social, engaging in festivities featuring singing, clapping, and the "Mucuwana" dance.

Their society is organized around male-dominated clans; the senior male clan leader typically holds authority.

Homes are rectangular, thatched-roof dwellings surrounded by wooden fences. Women fashion functional crafts like cow-hide baby carriers, wooden dolls, bracelets, and iron crosses.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Muhakaona people have their own ancient religion based on appeasing the spirits. Ancestral worship is central just as it is for neighboring peoples.

What Are Their Needs?

There are many who know the Lord in southern Africa, especially Angola, the homeland of the Muhakaona people. They need contact with people who closely follow the Lord, who can disciple them in Christ's ways. Christians can have regular contact with them by helping them find potable water sources and by helping them as veterinarians for their cattle.
