Introduction / History

The Mwera, also known as the Nyasa Mwera, reside along the southern shores of Lake Nyasa in the Ruvuma Region. They speak the Mwera language, part of the Bantu family, and also communicate in Swahili for trade and external relations. Historically, the Mwera relied on fishing, small-scale farming, and river transport, forming clan-based villages that preserved traditional customs.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Mwera communities cultivate cassava, maize, rice, and bananas, while raising goats and poultry for household use. Fishing remains a key livelihood for those near Lake Nyasa. Families live in extended households, collaborating on farming, childcare, and community events. Traditional ceremonies, music, and dance continue to reinforce their cultural identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Mwera historically practiced animism, venerating their ancestors and natural spirits; however, today, many identify as Christians, primarily Catholics and Protestants. Traditional practices persist in some areas, and believers need guidance to rely solely on Christ rather than ancestral spirits.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mwera people need access to healthcare, education, and clean water in their remote, lakeside communities. Spiritually, they need clear discipleship, teaching in their own language, and local leaders to strengthen the church and reach those who have not yet met Jesus.
